Rudy Giuliani - Leadership in Difficult Times

Providing leadership for New York City is a challenge under normal circumstances - it's easily one of the most complicated and diverse cities in the world. Rudy Giuliani looks back at the leadership lessons learned in a lifetime of public service and how they came together to provide strength at a defining moment in America's history.

About Rudy Giuliani

During two terms as mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani made New York into the great city it once was with his ideas, management and goal-driven style. In eight years, he reduced crime by 57 percent, cut welfare rolls in half, reduced taxes by $2.5 billion and created a record number of new jobs. Because of his leadership, the city is once again a great place to live and one of the world’s most productive metropolises.

But his toughest challenge had yet to come. With the tragic events of September 11th the rest of the world found out what New Yorkers already knew – that Rudy Giuliani was a determined leader who could bring them remarkable strength and stability at a time of great uncertainty. During the crisis he became, in essence, “America’s Mayor.” He calmed, consoled and reassured the public, while urging them to return to their normal lives and not to let the terrorists achieve their aim of disrupting life. In one of the saddest times in American history, the remarkable leadership of Mayor Giuliani and the extraordinary heroism of his fellow New Yorkers restored faith in the ideals that are so vital to a free society. In honor of his steadfastness Time magazine named Mayor Giuliani their 2001 Person of the Year Award.

Captain Dennis Fitch - If You Think You Can, You Will

Filled with passengers, a United Airlines jumbo jet suddenly lost all flight controls at 37,000 feet. Captain Dennis Fitch, an off-duty pilot on his way home, offered to help. What he and the cockpit crew did and how they did it was without precedent, and their teamwork saved nearly 200 lives. Denny's story is gripping and inspiring. The speech includes tapes of the dramatic cockpit-to-ground communication of the ordeal that shows how professional strangers pulled together to avert total disaster. It cuts to the bone.

About Dennis Fitch

When United Airlines flight #232 lost its hydraulic flight controls on July 19, 1989, Denny Fitch was sitting in a passenger seat in the cabin of the plane. Moments later he was in the cockpit, volunteering his services. When the plane made its crash landing in an Iowa cornfield, he was at the controls, doing his part to assist the heroic flight crew. A DC-10 pilot and trainer, Captain Fitch was instrumental in the crew’s success at saving nearly 200 lives that day.

Captain Fitch offers more than just a riveting story of drama in the sky. He teaches audiences that there is no “I” in teamwork – that the potential for success is tied directly to how people work together and how much they believe in themselves. He asks his audience to look inside, to recognize their own ability to be heroic every day. He inspires belief in an inner strength that conquers fear and prepares for the challenges ahead.

Mike Zafirovski – Public Safety & Personal Security Technology

Mike Zafirovski is president and chief operating officer of Motorola, Inc. In addition, he continues to serve as president of Motorola’s Personal Communications Sector until a successor is named. Zafirovski was promoted to Motorola president and chief operating officer on July 25, 2002. He and Chris Galvin, chairman and chief executive officer, compose the two-person Office of the Chairman that leads Motorola.

About Mike Zafirovski

Zafirovski joined Motorola in June 2000 to oversee Motorola’s wireless handset businesses, including cellular phones, related software and consumer two-way radios. With 2001 sales over $10 billion and 18,000 employees, PCS is Motorola’s largest single business segment. Under Mike’s leadership, over the past two years Motorola’s handset business has gained market share, returned to profitability, introduced an exciting portfolio of products and a new marketing campaign.

Prior to joining Motorola, Zafirovski spent 24 years at General Electric Company. He joined GE in 1975. After a series of rotational assignments, he was promoted to the GE corporate audit staff in 1978. This was a key training assignment for managerial talent within the company. For the next three and a half years, he conducted financial and operation reviews at nine of the company businesses in the Americas, Europe and Asia. From 1982 to 1996, he held a series of increasingly more senior positions with GE, including eight years as president and CEO of four businesses. In 1996, Zafirovski was promoted to president of GE Lighting for Europe, Middle East and Africa. After three years, he was promoted to president and CEO of GE Lighting, one of GE’s 10 businesses. He reported to Jack Welch, GE’s then-chairman and CEO.

John Fulton - Intelligence Networking & Analysis

On the morning of September 11th 2001, Mr. Fulton and his team at the CIA were running a pre-planned simulation to explore the emergency response issues that would be created if a plane were to strike a building. Little did they know that the scenario would come true in a dramatic way that day. Information is the most powerful tool available in the homeland security effort. At the core of every initiative currently underway to protect our country and its citizens is the challenge of getting the right information to the right people at the right time. How can so much information from around the world be captured and processed in meaningful and timely ways? Mr. Fulton shares his insights into the intelligence community, and shares a vision of how today's information systems will be developed into even better counter-terrorism tools of tomorrow.

About John Fulton

John Fulton’s 25 years in the intelligence community has contributed to his recognition as an expert in risk & threat response analysis, scenario gaming, and strategic planning. He is on staff for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), currently serving as Chief of the Strategic War Gaming Division of the National Reconnaissance Office, and as a member of U.S. Joint Forces Command's Project Alpha - a prestigious "think tank" for advanced concepts related to such issues as homeland security. He formerly served as the mission director for our nation's satellite imagery program as well as replacing Army Astronaut Same Gemar as the Director of the National Security Space Master Plan for the U.S. Department of Defense and Intelligence Space Communities under the auspices of the Deputy UnderSecretary of Defense (Space).

His counter-terrorism and homeland security responsibilities include advising the Director Central Intelligence Staff for Homeland Security, the U.S. Marshall's Office, and collaboration with the National Security Council.

In the private sector Fulton has developed a number of patents related to positioning, "smart GPS " applications, communications, and audio/video technology. He oversees the development of public & personal safety applications of these capabilities through SafeSTAR projects, and contributes to the strategic planning and conceptual design of the SafeSTAR Homeland Security Command Center.

Dan Kane - The SafeSTAR Homeland Security Command Center

In a society with such diverse protection systems already in place, one of the most significant challenges we face is getting everyone engaged and connected to a national homeland security program. If you have responsibilities at the local or state level for public safety, health care, emergency management, or security at a major infrastructure site (i.e. utility, hospital, government facility or major business structure), how do you get "plugged in" to information and intelligence critical to your success?

The SafeSTAR Homeland Security Command Center will provide the connection point for appropriate and timely exchange of information between those in the public and private sectors, and between the various levels of homeland security responsibility in federal, state, and local organizations. Mr. Kane will share the command center development plan and explain how participants can register for access to SafeSTAR.

About Dan Kane

As a founder of NLSI, Dan Kane has served as Director & CEO since 1997, bringing his experience in law enforcement, commercial & residential security, technology systems, and project management to the unique mission of the organization. He has served as consultant and program designer for clients ranging from public safety agencies to major airlines, industrial operations, and computer companies.

His diverse background in the public and private sectors includes nine years in law enforcement with such unique assignments as Crime Prevention Specialist, Director of an anti-gang/anti-drug program, and Advisor to a law enforcement youth group. Kane has also held positions in professional security, working in Loss Prevention where he successfully investigated and resolved internal theft cases, and as Director of Safety for a residential community.

Kane’s interest in technology has always played a role in his endeavors; he worked for a computer software company while in high school and college, and after graduation continued for several years as a corporate Systems Analyst and Network Administrator while also operating a small two-way radio business. Today he remains active in related projects such as database management, graphic design, communications systems integration, and GPS technology development – always with the goal of bringing better information to people in various environments.
